In such a way previously eastern frontiers of Germany became western frontiers of Poland. During World War II Nazis built a massive POWs camp a couple of miles south of the railway station, where Allied Airmen were held. On the night of 24\/25 March 1944 76 prisoners escaped from the camp &#8211; the operation was nicknamed <em>&#8216;The Great Escape&#8217;<\/em>. More can be found\u00a0<a style=\"color:#990000;\" title=\"The Great Escape\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stalag_Luft_III#The_.22Great_Escape.22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.
