The summit of Ben Wyvis, a great massif between Dingwall and Garve, by the main road to Ullapool, was my first Munro I’ve climbed.<\/p>\n
UPDATE: I climbed it again yesterday (1st August 2016). The differences? It’s almost nine years later, and weather was worse. But still it was a great day out.<\/p>\n
From a designated car park, I followed a well maintained path for a while through the woods and ferns up to a farm gate. From there the path wasn’t so obvious, and sometimes it simply disappeared. I was desperately looking for coloured signs marking the route (a habit brought from continental Europe), but there was simply nothing like that. From time to time I spotted white marks on the rocks and at first I thought they were man-made; but they proved to be colonies of tiny lichen, and they definitely weren’t marking the route. Higher up, the main ridge was wrapped in cloud, making navigation difficult, and my situation became even more desperate. When I was nearing the summit the clouds lifted up enough to uncover stunning views.<\/p>\n
