The most prominent concern is the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, which has been worsened by the recent volatile situation in the Persian Gulf. This distinction was based on their origins: the Hebrews were native Palestinian Jews, while the Hellenists were Greek-speaking Jews from the diaspora (or foreign lands). The perceived inequality in how welfare was distributed led to a conflict that threatened to divide the community. As tensions escalated, the Apostles had to address the issue, and they did so through what we could effectively call a process of consultation. Although the biblical account suggests that the conflict was resolved immediately by the Apostles’ proposal, it is likely that this followed extensive discussions during which members of both groups expressed their anger, bitterness, and resentment. After listening to both sides, the Apostles proposed a solution. They suggested that the assembly would appoint a number of officers put in charge of the community’s welfare needs. This approach was put into action, and as a result, peace was restored. The community thrived, and “the word of God continued to increase, and the number of disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem.”

Tensions and conflicts are part and parcel of communal and social life, driven by our imperfect human nature and differences in opinion, attitude, behaviour, expectations and so on. Uniformisation – making everyone exactly the same – is one way of removing such conflicts. Tried every now and again by highly radical autocrats over centuries, it has never worked and never will because it goes against human nature, not to mention that it’s bad in the long term, as it makes any intellectual development and progress impossible. The only way forward is to find ways to compromise and accommodate differences in a way that benefits most. Full satisfaction is hardly ever achieved, but an acceptable level is reached when the pros outweigh the cons. Sometimes it’s called a social contract. It’s something dynamic: revised and reformed as the circumstances change. It requires an open mind and flexibility from all involved. But what are the requirements and tools for achieving satisfactory results?

In today’s Gospel, we encounter the familiar words: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” While they may sound like a poetic but overused religious slogan, they actually hold profound significance for our lives when we explore their deeper meaning. The phrase suggests that there is a path leading us from where we are to a better place. To arrive at this destination, we must follow this path, which means walking in the footsteps of the one who established it. As believers who commit to following Christ, we are called to emulate his way of life at the individual, domestic, communal, and societal levels. This involves letting go of hatred, aversion, resentment, and jealousy. Instead, we strive to forgive others and seek forgiveness, to understand one another, and to pursue reconciliation. We also need to be attuned to the needs of others, just as we are to our own. Achieving this requires us to honestly assess ourselves and those around us, as ultimately, we must seek the truth. Doing so increases our chances of experiencing a life filled with inner peace and purpose, even amid everyday challenges. This is where the calming words of Jesus find their fulfilment: “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.”

Image by John Mounsey from Pixabay

This Thursday, elections will take place across Britain.
